Discovering Opera - Madame Butterfly

26 February 2011 by Cristina

Puccini's Madam Butterfly.

Set in Japan, this tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his young Japanese bride inspired Puccini to write some of his most sublime and beautiful music.

An American naval officer marries a 15 year-old Japanese girl for sex, then returns three years later with another wife, where upon the teenager is coerced into giving up their child and commits suicide.

Woodbridge Passion Play - Good Friday

25 February 2011 by Catherine

Catherine interviews Lyn Spall about the creation of the Woodbridge Passion Play - Elmhurst Park, Good Friday - Friday 22 April, 11am.

Visit many towns on Good Friday morning and you may see a band of churchgoers following behind a large wooden cross in what is called the Walk of Witness. For many years this has taken place through the streets of Woodbridge. But Lyn Spall, a resident of the town, wanted to do more in telling the story of Easter.

In 2007 she gathered a number of people together from the churches in the town and suggested they put on a Passion Play, a dramatic retelling of the Easter story, in the town's park. It was a tremendous success with dozens of people taking part and many, many more gathering to watch the performance.

This year Woodbridge is once again holding a Passion Play in Elmhurst Park. It has a new cast, and a new script. Still based very closely on the Bible, the dramatisation has been created by two talented local people - Gay Nicholls and Andrea Skevington from St John's Church. Music has also been specially written for the band and for the choirs, whose members have been drawn from different groups in the area. This year the actors will be in contemporary dress, too, so there will be a very different feel to the performance, but it is still sure to be a powerful and moving experience for all those attending.

Dee Masque Players - Ustinov

22 February 2011 by Dee

Dee goes along to a rehearsal evening and meets the Director Reg Balmforth and members of the Cast.

General Sir Mallalieu Fitzbuttress has returned from a 4 year stint in Malaya, to find his household isn't exactly as he had left it.  The apparent lack of enthusiasm for his return, lead him to question the way of life he has been leading.  Taking inspiration from his non-conformist brood, he prepares to make a better life for himself, as a tramp!

As his travels come to the attention of the media, he is forced to take refuge in his own garden, where the laws of property protect him.  His family seek to attract him back into the fold but find it is they that have to bend to the iron will of the General.

With revelations about each character, slowly coming to the fore, this is a wonderful insight into the 1960's way of life, as seen from the inside of family life.
