Discovering Opera - Tosca - March 2011

30 March 2011 by Cristina

Puccini's - Tosca is a story of overwhelming passion amidst the perils of war. Set in Rome at the time of Napoleon’s advance on the city, the opera opens with the flight of Angelotti, an escaped political prisoner. He seeks refuge in a church where he is protected by Cavaradossi, a local artist who is also the lover of the famous singer, Floria Tosca. The young painter acts suspiciously while protecting his friend and Tosca thinks jealous thoughts, believing him unfaithful. The chief of police, Baron Scarpia, plays upon her jealousy to locate the two men, who are soon captured.

Angelotti takes his own life rather then be held prisoner and Tosca desperately begs Scarpia to spare Cavaradossi, offering her affections in exchange for his life. After securing a note saving her lover from his death sentence, she stabs Scarpia and hurries off to be with Cavaradossi. Tosca finds she has been tricked, however, and the artist dies at the hands of a firing squad. Facing capture for her crime, she leaps to her death to join her lover in the afterlife.

Woodbridge Primary School - Book Club - The London Eye Mystery

25 March 2011 by Cliff

There is no restriction on age when it comes to people wanting to gather together to talk about enjoying a good book. At Woodbridge Primary School a group of pupils has been meeting regularly with Catherine Larner to discuss a story selected for them from Young Browsers children's bookshop in the town.

Previous titles have included Broken Glass by Sally Grindley and Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce. Today the children - Andrea, Angus, Josh, Katie, Oliver, Raffy, Rikki and Thomas, all from year five - are talking about The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd.

This is an award-winning book which centres on the famous London visitor attraction, where a young boy disappears. His family are bewildered - how could he have vanished when his young cousins saw him enter the pod yet he wasn't there with the other tourists when it came back down to the ground? Feeling worried and responsible, the brother and sister try to solve the mystery.

History People - Introduction to History by Peter Ward

17 March 2011 by Barry

Husband and wife team, Peter Ward and Jackie Marshall-Ward, first met through a mutual interest in history which has inspired them to pursue a wide variety of topics.

Peter is a practical historian skilled in recreating artefacts from the past in wood, leather and metal. Examples of his work are to be found in museums such as the Victoria and Albert, the British Library and H.M.S.Victory. Many of his historical shoes, sword hangers and scabbards are in use constantly by dance and reenactment societies. Everything he makes is based on sound research into methods and materials, whichmeans, for example, that leather items are all hand stitched.

His skills are in daily use in his antique repair and restoration business giving new life to cherished items from very distressed furniture to much loved gun cases and harness.
